Dame Antoinette Sibley (b. 1939)

and

Eloise Sibley (b. 1975)

At home, London
24 June 1977

Sibley was a principal dancer with the Royal Ballet and established a celebrated partnership with Anthony Dowell. She also danced a much fêted pas de deux with Nureyev, in Frederick Ashton’s Jazz Calendar.

Schwartz began by making a number of photographs of her alone, in her drawing-room. However, he noted, ‘when she said she preferred to be shown as a private person, we decided to include her daughter, Eloise.’ Schwartz recalled that his ‘mentor, Philippe Halsman, pronounced this portrait to be “very sophisticated”, including an innocent child with the minimally-clad figures in the background.’
