Rubinstein was one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century. A child prodigy, he gave his first performance at the age of 4 and continued to perform well into his late 80s.
At the time of the sitting, he was 90. ‘I suggested to Mr. Rubinstein that he sit at the piano’, Schwartz recalled, ‘to which he jokingly said, “I suppose that’s the only way you can tell that I’m a musician!”’
