Alfred Thompson (‘Tom’) Denning,
Baron Denning (1899-1999)
His study, Lincoln’s Inn, London
15 March 1977
Judge and author, Denning served as Master of the Rolls, 1962–82.
Schwartz described him as ‘a genial gentleman, with a delightful sense of humour, outgoing and kindly.’ To arrange the scene, ‘we had his courtroom chair brought in to heighten the traditional atmosphere. I suggested he wear his ceremonial attire . . . he was relieved when I told him he need wear only the outer robe.’ As Schwartz later learned, ‘beneath his robe he wore a jacket with all his war decorations received during the First World War – “just in case”.’
