Dame Kiri Janette Te Kanawa (b. 1944)

Born in New Zealand, Kiri Te Kanawa is an internationally renowned soprano. She became a star in the 1970s with performances at the Royal Opera House, Convent Garden. Her first major success was as the Countess in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro in 1971. In 1981 she sang Handel’s Let the Bright Seraphim at the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana. In 2013 she made an appearance in the British television series, Downton Abbey (season 4) as Dame Nellie Melba, a renowned Australian operatic soprano. She was made Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1982.
