Dr. Jonas Salk (1914-1995)

and

Françoise Gilot (b. 1921)

At home, La Jolla, CA
5 September 1976

Salk discovered and developed the first effective vaccine against polio in 1955. He married the French-born painter, Françoise Gilot, former partner of Picasso, in 1970.

‘I told Jonas I was looking forward to doing a portrait of him that was a little bit different from those other photographers had done. I hit upon the idea of having his picture taken with Françoise…he certainly gave every evidence of being just like a school boy in love. It was great fun to photograph them.’
