Kenneth Clark, Baron Clark (1903 - 1983)

At home, The Albany, Piccadilly, London
7 April 1977

The most famous art historian of his generation, Clark is best known for his popular Civilisation series produced for BBC television in 1969. He wrote a generous foreword to Contemporaries: Portraits by Bern Schwartz (1978), a book featuring highlights from the exhibition held at the Colnaghi Gallery the previous year. Clark also featured among the sitters.

‘I showed him a number of my portraits’, recalled Schwartz. ‘On viewing my pictures, including Golda Meir, Clifford Curzon, Yehudi Menuhin and Henry Moore, he turned to me and said, “You’re an artist.” I was overwhelmed.’
