La Révérende Mère Bernès (1901-1996)
Saint Vincent de Paul, Ein Karem, Jerusalem
13 October 1977
La Mère Bernès was a French-born nun. In the 1930s she worked at the convent of San Gioacchino in Rome where she helped hide Jewish families from the Gestapo. After the war, she moved to Jerusalem where she headed Saint Vincent de Paul Hospice, a home for physically and mentally handicapped children of all religions.
Regarding her daily schedule and work, Schwartz recalled that it ‘seemed to us a backbreaking, never-ending job, but she is completely serene and happy.’
