Thatcher was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990, the first woman to hold the office. She was known as the ‘Iron Lady’ due to her strict conservative policies.

 At the time of the sitting, Thatcher was an MP, leader of the opposing Conservative Party and two years away from being elected Prime Minister. Upon viewing the proofs, she remarked, ‘I want a photograph that will help me win the election.’ And she did using this portrait for her campaign poster and official photographs.
