Dame Margot Fonteyn (1919-1991)

At home, Knightsbridge, London
3 May 1977

Fonteyn was the most famous British ballet dancer of the twentieth century. She formed a celebrated dancing partnership with Rudolf Nureyev.

‘At one point, I asked her to get up so I could change the chair’, Schwartz recollected. ‘I took one hand in mine and just twirled her around. She appeared to be a little confused until I told her that now I could say that I had danced with Dame Margot.’
