A great-grandson of Queen Victoria and uncle of Prince Philip, Mountbatten was a British admiral and statesman. He served as the last Viceroy of India (1947) and first Governor-General of independent India. An uncle of Prince Philip and great-uncle of Prince Charles, whom he served as a mentor, he was assassinated by an IRA bomb in 1979.

Mountbatten was a close friend of Schwartz and his wife, Ronny, and invited the couple to photograph him at home a number of times.
