Pope Paul VI (1897-1978)
Audience Hall, The Vatican
21 June 1978
Pope Paul VI served as Pope of the Catholic Church from 1963 until his death in 1978. As the first pontiff to visit six continents, he was up to then the most travelled pope in history.
The day of the sitting marked his fifteenth anniversary in office. Schwartz recalled him saying ‘that he was getting older and had a very short time to live’ and making ‘an urgent plea for peace.’ In fact, he died six weeks later.
