Charles, Prince of Wales (b. 1948)

Buckingham Palace, London
30 March 1977

Prince Charles is the eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip and heir to the British throne. After leaving the navy in 1976, he founded The Prince’s Trust to help young people realise their potential. The following year, Prince Charles, aged twenty-nine, sat for this portrait.

‘I told him of Philippe Halsman’s famous “Jump” photographs, and showed him Halsman’s book. He was fascinated, and commented, “You’re not going to ask me to jump, are you?” I did not.’
