Sir Isaiah Berlin (1909-1997)
At home, The Albany, Piccadilly, London
6 July 1977
Born in Riga, Latvia, Berlin was raised and educated in England. A philosopher and political theorist who defended individual freedom and diversity against absolute systems, he is often considered one of the greatest scholars of his generation.
‘When I arrived on time’, said Schwartz, Sir Isaiah ‘compared me to the man in 'Around the World in 80 Days', in that I had a different sitting every day, arriving punctually.’
