Sir Osbert Lancaster (1908-1986)

At home, Knightsbridge, London
24 March 1977

Lancaster was a cartoonist, author, art critic and stage designer known for his cartoons published in the Daily Express from 1939 and his productions at the Royal Opera House and Glyndebourne during the 1950s and 1960s.

‘He mentioned that most photographs of him showed him as severe and stern. I had the impression that he did not like to be portrayed as such. He gave me one of his books, The 'Littlehampton Bequest', a charming spoof of English nobility and portraiture.'
