Following a tragic car accident in 1928, when their third child was born with mental disabilities, medical doctors Abraham and Malka (‘Maly’) Spighel decided to devote their lives to working with similar children. In 1951, they founded AKIM-Jerusalem, which offers care and support to people with intellectual disabilities of all ages, religions and levels of functioning, and to their families.
