Anthony Neil Wedgwood (‘Tony’) Benn
(1925-2014)

His office, Secretary of State for Energy, London
30 June 1977

Politician and diarist, Benn was in the 1970s the unofficial leader of the Labour Party’s radical populist left. At the time of this portrait, he was Secretary of State for Energy (1975–79).

‘Tony Benn’s office had previously been that of Lord Carrington [Conservative politician who later became Foreign Secretary]’, Schwartz learned at the sitting. ‘He did not change the furniture, but to give the office a feeling of the Labour Party, he had added two huge old union banners. This is where he is seen.'
